Signs Your Pet May Need a Sick Pet Exam

Pets are talented little weirdos. They may act fine one minute and then make you wonder if you need to cancel your whole afternoon the next.

Common reasons to schedule a sick pet exam include:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Not eating or drinking normally
  • Lethargy or hiding
  • Coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge
  • Ear odor, head shaking, or scratching
  • Limping or signs of pain
  • Eye redness or discharge
  • Skin irritation, itching, or hair loss
  • Changes in urination or drinking habits
  • Sudden behavior changes

A sick pet exam gives our veterinarian a chance to look for the cause, explain what may be happening, and recommend the next step.

Same-Day Urgent Veterinary Visits

Some problems should not wait several days. Same-day urgent visits are meant for concerns that need prompt attention but may not require an emergency hospital.

Urgent concerns can include ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, eye problems, minor wounds, sudden limping, painful ears, urinary issues, allergic reactions, or a pet who suddenly seems much worse than usual. Because urgent appointments are based on daily availability, please call first. Our veterinary team will ask about your pet’s symptoms and help determine whether we can see your pet that day or whether emergency care is the safer option.

When an urgent visit requires double-booking or triple-booking the schedule, an urgent visit fee may apply. The current urgent veterinary fee is approximately $102.50. We will discuss availability and fees before your visit so you know what to expect.

What to Expect During Your Pet’s Visit

Every sick pet visit is tailored to your pet’s symptoms and condition, but most appointments include:

  • Medical History Review: We’ll discuss your pet’s symptoms, when they started, and any changes you’ve noticed at home.
  • Physical Examination: Our veterinarian will perform a nose-to-tail exam to check your pet’s overall health and look for signs of illness, injury, pain, or infection.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Depending on your pet’s condition, we may recommend blood work (laboratory testing), fecal testing (stool analysis), urinalysis (urine testing), ear cytology (examining ear debris under a microscope), or other diagnostics to help identify the cause of the problem.
  • Treatment Recommendations: Once we have a better understanding of what’s going on, we’ll discuss treatment options, medications, home care instructions, and any recommended follow-up care.

Our goal is to find the source of the problem whenever possible, provide clear answers, and help your pet start feeling better as quickly as possible.

Rooted in Bethalto Since 1976

Bethalto Animal Clinic was founded by Don and Kay Buller in 1976 as a family endeavor. For nearly 50 years, our clinic has cared for dogs and cats through three generations of families.

We are not a corporate clinic, and that matters to many of our clients. Our practice has been built on referrals, word of mouth, and a high standard of care that keeps families coming back.

Regular Check-Ups Help Catch Problems Earlier

Sick visits matter, but regular veterinary check-ups are still one of the best ways to protect your pet’s long-term health. Routine exams help our veterinarian monitor changes over time, catch concerns earlier, and recommend care before small issues become bigger problems.
